Alwoodley

Alwoodley is a suburb of north-east Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, and one of the city’s wealthiest areas. It is home to a sizeable proportion (around 30%) of the Leeds Jewish community. Alwoodley is a well kept residential suburb, built mostly after the war. The area has lots of green spaces but lacks the genteel maturity of Roundhay or Headingley. The majority of homeowners are professionals or self employed people who live with their families in semi-detached and detached housing. There are a number of apartment blocks, which are popular with the retired section of the population. Recently a number of large properties have been sold and replaced by luxury flats.

The A61 Harrogate Road runs from north to south through the centre of Alwoodley, which is 4.5 miles from the City Centre. The area comprises a large part of the postcode LS17, which contains most of North Leeds and the surrounding countryside. On either side of Alwoodley is Adel (LS16), to the west, and Shadwell, to the east. There are a number of commuter villages nearby such as East Keswick and Wike.

The two largest schools in the area are Leeds Grammar School and Allerton High School. Alwoodley is the main catchment area for both of these schools.

The area is well known for its selection of golf courses in the immediate vicinity, namely Alwoodley Golf Club, Moortown Golf Club and Sandmoor Golf Club, and in the wider area, namely Moor Allerton Golf Club, Scarcroft Golf Club, Wike Ridge Golf Club, and many others.

Nearby is Eccup reservoir – home to a growing population of red kites.
