Moor Grange

Moor Grange Estate was built near the West Park area of Leeds in the 1950′s, on reclaimed farm land known as ‘Old Farm’. It was originally owned by the local council, and was leased by the council to tennants as a council estate. Most of the housing on the estate is now privately owned.

Most Street names are preceded by Old Farm, Latchmere, Moor Grange and Fillingfir. It also benefits from three large grassed areas for recreation. Close by for fishing is Clayton Ponds. Some old and recent pictures of the estate can be seen on the website. www.leodis.org which has a large collection of photo’s from Leeds and surrounding areas.

Moor Grange was also the name of a (boys) County Secondary School just across the Ring Road. It has since been demolished and is now home to a HM Revenue and Customs House. It has one pub “The Dalesman” and three rows of shops which include, Newsagents, Butchers, Grocers etc etc. It has one church close by called the West Park United Reformed Church. Another church was built in the late 60′s called St Andrews on the junction of Butcher Hill and Old Park Drive which is technically on the Spen estate. It is circled by the West Park section of the Leeds Outer Ring Road, Spen Lane and Butcher Hill.

Leeds Bradford Airport is approximately 4 miles to the north west and Leeds City Square is about 4 miles to the south east. To the north is the Ireland Wood estate. To the South are Kirkstall, Hawksworth and Headingley. The Harrogate Line railway passes near to Moor Grange, plus it is the northern terminus for the First Leeds overground bus route 56 to Whinmoor via Headingley and Leeds City Centre. In the 1970′s Moor Grange had three regular bus routes operated by LCT. the number 74 went from Moor Grange to Belle Isle. The number 76 went from Moor Grange to Middleton and the number 73 (a single decke route) went from Moor Grange to Greenthorpe. The number 73 was one of a few unique Leeds bus routes that did not go via the Leeds City Square. Although the Number 135 was a school bus route it did traverse the same route as the 74 and 76 from Moor Grange to Beckett Park but terminating on Foxcroft Close for pupils attending Beckett Park Junior Mixed and Infant School. Originally these buses (except for the 73) originated at Latchmere Cross but later the Bus Stop was moved to the junction of Latchmere Drive and Latchmere Green. The 73 always started at the junction of Latchmere Drive and Latchmere Green.

Moor Grange was also used as a backdrop for the TV series The Beiderbecke Affair which featured shots from Abbey Grange School and Butcher Hill playing fields.

Moor Grange is also the name of a row of houses in Yeadon situated on Victoria Road (A658).
